Chapter 9: Southern Blaine

Blaine-Passons Family

As mentioned before, James White Blaine was born on September 1, 1859 in Choctaw County or Winston County, Mississippi. Nancy Jane Passons was born on January 21, 1865 in Winston County. They were married on December 24, 1884 in Winston, Mississippi and had nine children: Samuel Augustus (1886), Jefferson Washington (1888), James Bunyun (died in infancy, 1890), Callie Ofelia (1892), Alma Della (1897), Alba "Alby" Lee (1899), Mollie (1902), Herbert Boyd (1906). Nancy died on April 30, 1936 in Winston County, Mississippi and is buried at the Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery in Mississippi. James died on January 13, 1937 in Winston County, Mississippi and is also buried at the Hopewell Baptist Church.

Their family shows up in Winston County (Beat 4, District 126), Mississippi on the 1910 census. It lists James W. (50), Nancy J. (44), Jeffie W. (22), Callie (18), Alma Della (13), Albie (10), Mollie (8), Herbert B. (4). James W. is a general farmer, the other family members are listed as laborers. I believe that the "F." after Alma's name is a mistake. One other note: the surname spelling is hard to read, it could be viewed as "Blain" or "Blaine".

Samuel Augustus "Gus" Blaine was born on February 12, 1886 in Choctaw County, Mississippi. He married Mattie B. Clement and later Jennie Woodson. He had five children--James Orell, Ruth, William Montgomery, Pauline and Joseph Ralph--though I am not certain which wife was their mother. Gus died on October 16, 1947 in Louisville, Mississippi and is buried in the Masonic Cemetery there.

Jefferson Washington Blaine, the second son, was born on March 19, 1888 in Choctaw County, Mississippi. I don't know who he married but he had four children: Mittie B., Marcelle, Bobbye Jane and Jeff Owen. Jefferson died on December 16, 1956 in Arkansas.

The infant James Bunyun Blaine was born and died on August 21, 1890.

Callie Ofelia Blaine was born on November 21, 1892. She married someone named Taylor and they had three children: Doyle, Geneva and J.W. She died on January 2, 1932.

Their daughter and sixth child, Alma Della Blaine was born on March 19, 1897 in Choctaw County, Mississippi. She married John Walter Moore and her story will continue in the next chapter.

Alba Lee "Alby" Blaine was born on September 29, 1899 in Winston, Mississippi. She married R.S. Cooper and lived in Cleveland, Mississippi. Alby died on November 15, 1983. There is an Alba Lee Blaine who shows up on the 1930 census in District 33, Cleveland, Bolivar, Mississippi. She was born in 1902 in Mississippi and her parents were both born in Mississippi. She is single and a boarder in another household. She was an operator at the telephone company. Even though she seems to be born three years later, it could be the same person.

Mollie Blaine was born on February 22, 1902 in Winston, Mississippi. Mollie married Milton Keyes and had three children: Jane, Ruby and James Blaine. Mollie died on October 12, 1982.

Herbert Boyd Blaine, the youngest sibling, was born on January 5, 1906 in Winston County, Mississippi. (His SS# was 426-01-7122). He married Elizabeth Lilly "Betty" Boyd on November 6, 1937 in Weir, Choctaw County, Mississippi. They had two children, David and Donald. Their family lived in Biloxi, Mississippi. Herbert Boyd died on March 15, 1978. His wife died on November 25, 1992.
